The Garbage Gestapo of Nicolosi ...

Sicily is fabulous in so many ways, it's easy to overlook some of the things that are wacky...like no storm drains and no curbside trash pick up. We've gotten used to walking or driving the trash to the end of the street to the community dumpster.

Our landlord informed us that there's a new ordinance in Nicolosi where it's unlawful to deposit trash in the dumpster during certain hours...as it creates an unsightly mess.

So here are the hours when you can free yourself of your smelly garbage without facing a $130 (the minimum) to $803 fine -- 10 pm to 6 am, which is when most Americans are asleep.

As I told our landlord, "That's garbage!"

Hmmm...At least once a week, I'll spot a Sicilian driver throwing their garbage out the car window. I wonder how that fits into the master plan.

Anywhere else in the world, they would say, dump your trash any time EXCEPT between 10 PM and 6 AM. Here, is it the opposite! CRAZY!

My guess would be that this is the beginning of many steps that will be imposed across Italy as there was recent legislation against littering and unsightly garbage piles with far more hefty fines.
